Summary: Melissa holds a Bachelor of Creative Arts, a Postgraduate Diploma in Arts (Art History) and a Master of Art Curatorship, University of Melbourne. She has previously completed curatorial internships at the Ian Potter Museum of Art and the Queensland Art Gallery. In 2006 Melissa completed a curatorial mentorship under Rebecca Coates at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art. Melissa has curated a number of independent exhibitions and worked within several commercial galleries. In 2004 she was the Assistant Director of Stella Dimadis Galleries, Collingwood and in 2005 Senior Curator of the Flesh vs. Machine visual arts program for the TekniKunst electronic arts festival. In 2006 Melissa established and curated the first twelve months of Ballan and Pannan Galleries, High Street Armadale, as a consultant to Kit Ballan and Vanessa Pannan. Melissa was previous Exhibitons Project Officer and Acting Exhibition Coordinator Design at Melbourne Museum and, most recently, Programme Manager at the Australian Commercial Galleries Association, Federation Square. Since 2004 Melissa has worked as an independent curator, writer and arts consultant under her business Loughnan Projects. Melissa founded Utopian Slumps in February 2007 and is Founding Director of the not for profit organisation, which closed its Collingwood doors at the end of December 2009. She is currently compiling a retrospective publication documenting the gallery's seminal 2007-2009 years. Goal: to build upon the success of Utopian Slumps by restructuring the business as a commercial gallery and relocating to Melbourne's CBD in April 2010. Melissa will continue to operate a not for profit project annexe of her business under USSR.
